Worried about what happens with the $85 billion in federal budget cuts likely to begin kicking in at midnight? You’re not alone.
Seventy percent of North Carolina residents surveyed in the latest Elon University Poll said they were either very worried or somewhat worried about the across-the-b0ard spending cuts. Twenty-eight percent said they were not very worried or not worried at all.
By political party, Democrats are more worried than Republicans or Independents.
By age, 44 percent of those 65 and older said they were very worried, while 32 percent of those between 18 and 30 said the same.
Gov. Pat McCrory shares the concern. So do members of Congress. And there is good reason. The list of potential cuts will affect all ages and political persuasions. They include cuts in education funding, work-study jobs, Head Start, environmental services, the military, law enforcement programs and child care and child health programs.
